Emma Van Mierlo & INES DIAZ BAUTISTA: Celebrities vs Role Models
Are we all role models? Two teenagers explore the concept of role models and the importance of finding the right one.
Emma is a Dutch citizen and an IB Diploma student at the Western International school in Shanghai. Although she is growing up in different cultures and has lived in Hong Kong, where she was born, as well as Malaysia, she loves spending the Summers back in her parents’ tiny home village, also named Mierlo in the Netherlands, catching up with friends and enjoying the countryside, quite the opposite of cosmopolitan Shanghai with more than 30 million people.
Other holidays are spent in South East Asia, and she feels that traveling has shaped her as a person, has made her more conscious of the world and the many issues it faces. She has taken part in an Environmental Action Group, joined a school volunteering project, building houses for villagers in Cambodia and currently volunteers at a Chinese Migrant Center in the outskirts of Shanghai, where she teaches English to migrant children and plays games with them in order to relieve the immense amount of pressure these kids face every day.
In her free time, she plays soccer and volleyball.
Walking the family dog in the neighbourhood is her link to the local Shanghainese people to practise her Mandarin speaking skills. She loves taking photos of everything that catches her eye and subsequently turns the photos into a beautiful art piece. Emma takes pictures and these can be found on a blog that she shares with a friend to show people the amazing things they see and experience.
