Andrew Vandermeulen: When Student Voice Is Heard
What happens when the voices of students are given both forum and power? The results can be incredible and inspirational - and it should be happening more often… are we ready to fully make the shift in the teacher-student relationship?
Andrew is the IB MYP Coordinator and an Individuals and Societies Teacher at the Western International School of Shanghai. Initially apprehensive about leaving his home and native land of Canada to pursue a career in education overseas, he has fallen under the spell of living and teaching on the international stage. When not immersed in the school year, Andrew accompanies his wife and two young children to the edge of the Canadian Shield in Eastern Ontario for an annual dose of long summer days involving fishing, water sports, camping, and hiking in the great outdoors.
